What is co-citation?

What does co-citation mean for the future?
1. Anchor text isn’t as important anymore.
2. Co-citation does not mean that SEO is dead; it’s just changing like always.
3. PR, Reputation Management, and brand building are always a great idea.
4. Links are still important.

Co-citation has not reached its maturity, but now is the time to know about it. This truth won’t revolutionize your SEO practice today, but it will have an increasing impact upon search in the future.

Good post Christy! I would like to share some more details about it.

Co-citation is a pretty big deal in the SEO world right now. It works across websites and follows links as well, allowing search engines to piece together a comprehensive map of different topics which are relevant to a piece of content. If you write an article about one thing with a tenuous link to the topic that you are actually targeting, Google will be able to pick up on the true topic and might de-value any links or any parts of the article that are not relevant.

The great thing about co-citation is that it allows you to target many long-tail phrases without having to actually fit those phrases into your content. This means that you can avoid using keyword phrases where they don’t really fit.
Co-citation and co-occurrence seem to be the next big thing in an attempt to avoid manipulation of SERPs, or as many will suggest, it is just another attempt to counter over-optimization, which was the very basis of Google Penguin’s introduction.
