Broken Link Building is simple concept. You search the web for websites related to yours that have referral links, i.e. links to related websites, on their site. For instance, a relationship website might have a referral link to a website that features dating tips. Your job when engaging in broken link building is to locate links on related websites that are broken, meaning that the URL no longer exists for whatever reason; essentially, when someone clicks on a broken link, it takes them to an error page, more specifically a 404 Error page.
