I really like using the domain/page comparison from OSE to compare competitors to the client's domain/page. For someone who has little or no idea how SEO and search engines in general work, it's nice to boil it down to a few numbers that can be compared.

On the same note, the keyword difficulty tool in SEOmoz is another very simple and intuitive way to convey similar information on a keyword by keyword basis.

Hi Mike, OSE is a great tool, but believing it blindly is not always an good idea. An instance of error found in OSE PA. see below:


I serached a site PA through opensiteexplorer.org

And while searching the PA through seomoz plugin I found the following:

As you can notice there is a difference in both metrics.

Also kindly see the image below which shows PA of a site toronto-internet-marketing.ca, if you analyze how they are building their backlink; its very very clear that they are using spammy back link techniques.

How can OSE give PA of 60 for these kind of sites. The funny part is that the site is ranking in Google for many of the keywords which is used as Anchor text (90% Spammy Techniques), Again Making Google fool, Don't know how all these Panda & EMD updation are effecting in SERP. Its seems the result is opposite of whatever Google says & updates in Panda & EMD.

Coming to PA, PA is a good factor for understanding a site authority in search engines but believing it completely is not fair.

what Seomoz says about PA?

"Seomoz score Page Authority on a 100-point, logarithmic scale. Thus, it's easier to grow your score from 20 to 30 than it would be to grow from 70 to 80. We constantly update the algorithm used to calculate Page Authority, so you may see your score fluctuate from time to time."

Technical Definition of Page Authority

It is based off of the Linkscape web index and includes link counts, mozRank, mozTrust, and dozens more. It uses a machine learning model to predicatively find an algorithm that best correlates with rankings across thousands of search results that we predict against.

So these algorithms calculate PA based on the backlinks of the site. if we can manipulate backlinks, we can definitely manipulate seomoz algorithmic calculation.

Hi Christy,

Certainly you can't blindly follow the data. However the PA statistic has generally had the strongest correlation to a page's ability to rank of any available statistics.

There is no error in thecoverguy's statistics. In the first screenshot you're looking at the page authority for the non-www version of the homepage (which doesn't exist, but OSE ignores that). It's a bit confusing that OSE doesn't default to where the URL redirects to, but that's just how it works. If you put www.thecoverguy.com into OSE you'll get 51, just like in the SERP overlay.

As you quote, the algorithm for PA is updates using machine learning to make it have the best correlation. If a page is ranking well with spammy backlinks, then OSE's algorithm will continue to treat those links as valuable. If Google updates to devalue the spammy backlinks that a page is ranking with, then OSE's algo will update as well.

However OSE doesn't have as complete an index as ahrefs or majestic, so it's not great for getting a complete picture. It also can't know about how and why particular penalties might be applied by Google, so you could certainly see pages with good PA stats that do not rank because of a penalty. Certainly any of these tools are only as good as how well you understand what they're doing and why.

Thanks Mike finding the error of www & non www. Hopefully seomoz will rectify the "default to where the URL redirects to".

As said we definitely need to wait for Google to identify these spammy backlinks building sites, but lets hope Geeks in Seomoz may identify this soon.

Lot to be rectified in Algorithms which search engines use to rank sites. I believe at least Google will identify these old spammy back link techniques ASAP so that these type of sites may not become a competitor to normal good quality sites.
