It's not really new, but it's worth mentioning again that getting links and mentions near those of other major authoritative businesses and sites in the same niche is a positive ranking factor. Google expects to see sites of a similar relevance, authority and focus being linked to or mentioned together.
This is essentially the off-page version of what we were previously discussing about leaving links to authoritative websites followed on-page.
